THIBAUT GARCIA and ANTOINE MORINIÈRE, guitar duo

Bach

Bach - Goldberg Variations, BWV 988

Although still in his early thirties, French-Spanish guitarist Thibaut Garcia is one of the most acclaimed classical guitarists of his generation, praised for playing that combines virtuosity and poetic sensitivity.

This project takes its origin from a deep artistic friendship with fellow guitarist Antoine Morinière and offers a fresh take on Bach’s masterpiece, revealing subtleties of structure and counterpoint. The arrangement, by Garcia and Morinière themselves, is the result of a full year of work. In their own words, they focused on ‘how to adapt the keyboard work for two guitars, while preserving the illusion of a single performer’. The two guitars were made especially for the project by luthier Hugo Cuvillier, using wood from the same tree.

Their recording of the work, issued in 2025 by Erato, has been greeted with glowing praise. Gramophone extolled their ‘absolute commitment to structural clarity’ and ‘nuanced approach to embellishment’, noting the radiant and varied tonal palette.

Their performance offers a fresh perspective on Bach’s Goldberg Variations, revealing the work’s intricate counterpoint and expressive detail through the distinctive colours of two guitars.

Peterhouse is the oldest of the constituent colleges in the University of Cambridge.  It was founded in 1284 by Hugo de Balsham, Bishop of Ely, on its current site close to the centre of the City.

The Peterhouse Theatre was built in 1883 to designs by one of the architectural masters of the Victorian era, Basil Champneys (1842-1935), whose other buildings include Newnham College and the Old Divinity School in Cambridge. Inspired by Palladio’s Teatro Olimpico at Vicenza (1580-85), the fine acoustics and intimate atmosphere of the Peterhouse Theatre make it the finest venue for chamber music in Cambridge, and one of the top three such venues in the whole country.
