Monteverdi’s 5th book of madrigals is famous for inaugurating what the composer termed a ‘Second Practice or Perfection of Modern Music’. It also interweaves two love stories drawn from Guarini’s popular play, Il Pastor Fido. The Kenderdine Consort, under the direction of Robert Hollingworth, dramatizes the contrasting tales by using two separate ensembles. Be prepared for a new perspective on Monteverdi’s 5th book as a cycle that takes listeners on affective journey from rejection through to reconciliation.
