Sasha Grynyuk returns to play Shostakovich with EAChO

Vaughan Williams, Shostakovich & Sibelius

Tickets for this event are no longer on sale online or at the ADC Theatre Box Office. Remaining tickets will be available to purchase with cash on the door of the venue.

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Vaughan Williams, EAChO are delighted to return to the West Road Concert Hall with two of his most popular works. The Overture was written for the Cambridge Greek Play production of Aristophanes’ Wasps at Trinity College. The amazing Toby Purser will then conduct the gorgeous Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus. Based on an English folksong, it was commissioned by the British Council for the 1939 World Fair.

The orchestra is then joined by the fabulous Ukrainian pianist, Sasha Grynyuk with another twentieth century masterpiece. Shostakovich wrote his, uncharacteristically joyful, Second Piano Concerto to celebrate his son’s 19th birthday. The symphony we will perform is also a celebratory work: Sibelius was commissioned by the Finnish government to compose the Fifth Symphony in honour of his own 50th birthday.

Join us for a joyful evening of celebratory music making.

COVID guidance (applicable for all Respiratory Communicable Diseases)

Updated March 2022

COVID remains prevalent in the UK and WRCH has a duty to ensure all those entering the building – including audiences, performers, volunteers, and staff – are kept safe. Whilst domestic government COVID restrictions in England have now been removed, we must all continue to take steps to minimise the transmission of COVID and other respiratory communicable diseases.

West Road is well equipped to mitigate against transmission through use of ventilation and provision of sanitiser throughout the building.

  • We ask all those visiting the building to contribute to our community’s safety by being fully vaccinated where possible and not attending if they feel unwell.
  • Although not currently mandated, the government suggests that you continue to wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you may come into contact with people you do not normally meet.
  • Sanitiser dispensers are located in the foyer and around the building. All visitors are encouraged to use these on arrival and exit.
  • The concert hall auditorium has a mechanical ventilation system providing predominantly fresh air. We recommend wearing an additional layer in cooler weather!
  • The foyer and ancillary spaces have CO2 monitors to indicate air quality and natural ventilation that users can adjust.
  • Official advice on how to stay safe and help prevent the spread of coronavirus is available here.

If you have any concerns about the concert hall reopening please contact us on wrch@mus.cam.ac.uk
