Tue 25 February
Camerata Musica

Celebrated for his rare technical sophistication, refinement of tone and innovative programmatic explorations, Igor Levit continues to make his mark on the classical music world as ‘one of the most probing, intelligent and accomplished artists of the new generation’ (The New York Times) and as a true artist ‘authentic in the most profound meaning of the word’ (The Sunday Times).

In this, his second visit to Camerata Musica, Levit performs an array of Romantic transcriptions of music first heard in other forms: Brahms’ transcription of Bach’s Chaconne for solo violin; the transcription and fantastic reimagining of Bach’s music in the Fantasia after J.S. Bach by one of the greatest pianist-composers of the early 20th century, Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924); Schumann’s ‘transcription’ of music he believed had been sung for him by ghosts in the Geistervariationen [Ghost Variations]; and Liszt’s transcription of Wagner’s Solemn March to the Holy Grail from his 1882 opera, Parsifal; and the monumental Busoni transcription of Liszt’s thunderous organ work of 1850: a Fantasia and Fugue on the chorale, ‘Ad nos, ad salutarem undam’ [‘Come to us, to the saving waters’], from Meyerbeer’s opera, The Prophet, premiered in Paris in 1849 to Europe-wide acclaim before an audience that included Chopin, Verdi, Berlioz, Turgenev, and Delacroix.
