GEORGIAN DIALOGUES: English Sonatas from the time of Handel

Handel, Geminiani, Gambarini, Festing & Hellendaal

Handel’s Sonatas for Violin and Keyboard are known and loved by audiences and performers alike. From the radiant warmth of his Sonata in D major to the ingenious counterpoint of his G minor Sonata, there is something for everyone. But what else was going on in England at the time? And what about composers closer to home?

Dialogus1685, a newly-formed period-instrument ensemble based in Cambridge, brings an intriguing programme of English Sonatas from the time of Handel to the magnificent setting of The Auditorium, Pembroke College. We’ll take you on a musical journey beginning in London, through the evocative and virtuosic music of Francesco Geminani, to the charming keyboard music of Elizabetta da Gambarini - the first woman to publish a set of keyboard works in England - and on to East Anglia, via the impulsive and expressive Sonatas of Suffolk-born violinist Michael Festing, to music currently still in manuscript form in the Fitzwilliam Museum by Pieter Hellendaal, the Dutch composer who moved to Cambridge and became Director of Music at Peterhouse. Expect musical surprises, and fascinating stories of forgotten personalities. An evening not to be missed!
