Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4 “Italian”

Clare College Music Society returns to West Road for their first concert of the new season, presenting a vibrant evening of Mozart, Strauss and Mendelssohn.
Opening the evening is the overture to Mozart’s famous The Marriage of Figaro, the bustling notes growing into an energetic frolicking theme that provides the perfect introduction to the hilarious opera.
Strauss’s oboe concerto, one of the most virtuosic and lyrical pieces written for the oboe, is among the last works written by the German composer. It was inspired by a conversation with John de Lancie, an American soldier who spent his civilian life as a professional oboist, and met Strauss while stationed in Germany in the Second World War. The concerto will be performed by 3rd year student Helena Mackie, principal oboe of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain 2016-17.
Commonly known as the “Italian”, Mendelssohn’s 4th symphony evokes the beautiful Italian countryside, and creates a vivid image of his travels to Rome and Naples. A buoyant and optimistic mood permeates all four movements, making it one of Mendelssohn’s most popular compositions.
