50th Anniversary Concert

A celebration of light music past and present!

Two World Premieres:

The Lakes of Cold Fen by Nigel Hess (best known for his theme tunes to Maigret, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and Ladies in Lavender), an evocative interpretation of a traditional Cambridge folk song collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1907.

Grantchester Variations by Tim Brooks, inspired by Pink Floyd’s Grantchester Meadows.

Gems from the past masters of light music, including:

Eric Coates  By the Sleepy Lagoon (Desert Island Discs Theme)

Charles Williams The Devil’s Galop (the Dick Barton Theme)

Leroy Anderson BlueTango

Robert Farnon Jumping Bean

Celebrating living composers:

Anthony Hedges Overture: Saturday Market

Matthew Curtis Light Blue Suite

Peter Bumstead Smoke Screen

The Cambridge Concert Orchestra is a champion of light music. Charles Shadwell (formerly of the BBC Variety Orchestra) donated his music library to the CCO in 1967, from which some items in this concert are drawn. (The tunes are well-known, if not the titles!) The CCO builds on that heritage, and is proud to perform works by contemporary light music composers.
